Licence terms

Ocean Spotter brings together two different kinds of works: on the one hand the content uploaded by users (photos, videos, notes, observations), and on the other hand the software of the platform itself. Different licence terms apply to each, as set out below.

Licence for User-Generated Content

Anyone who uploads content to Ocean Spotter retains the copyright in their work. The platform is granted a licence to display, store and promote the content within the scope of platform operations. The full details of that platform-side licence are set out in § 5 of the Terms of Use.

In addition, when uploading, users can decide whether third parties may reuse the content. Four licences are available:

All Rights Reserved

The default. Outside the platform, no one may use the work — the platform-side licence under the Terms of Use is unaffected.

CC BY 4.0 (Attribution)

Others may share, adapt and use the work — including commercially — but must give appropriate credit to the creator, provide a link to the licence and indicate any changes made. Full licence text: creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0.

CC BY-NC 4.0 (Attribution — NonCommercial)

Same as CC BY, but commercial use is not permitted. Useful when the work may be reused for research, education and private purposes, but not in commercial advertising or paid publications. Full licence text: creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0.

CC0 1.0 (Public Domain)

The creator waives all copyright and related rights worldwide and releases the work into the public domain. Anyone may use it without conditions, even without attribution. Full licence text: creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0.

Changing a licence later

Once a Creative Commons licence has been chosen for a work, it cannot be revoked retroactively for parties who have already relied on it. This is a deliberate feature of Creative Commons licences and provides reliability for downstream reuse.

Software Licence

The software of the Ocean Spotter platform is the property of hanki vs. HANKI GmbH. The source code, design, trade names and logos are protected by copyright and trademark law. Any reuse outside the platform requires the prior written consent of hanki vs. HANKI GmbH.

Where the platform incorporates third-party components (open-source libraries, fonts, icon sets), the respective licences of those components apply. A list of the components in use can be requested by email at info@hanki.com.
